Abstract
We examined the exochorion structure of Pyrrhogyra otolais otolais and compared it with literature data for this species and genus, and with other genera within Epiphilini and Callicorini, tribes of the Biblidinae subfamily. Its exochorion is characterized by long and short ridges, a feature recognized in P. nearea hypsenor, which is more similar to the exochorion of Callicorini than to that of other Epiphilini. The exochorionic description of P. otolais in the literature is insufficient to account for some important features and, probably due to the scale used, the cells between the ridges have been described as ribs. So far, this character is unique for this species. We suggest further exploration of the exochorion in other species within the genus Pyrrhogyra and the tribe Epiphilini to compare differences in the genus exochorion within the tribe and to test its potential use for contrasting with phylogenetic proposals in both groups.
