Abstract

A historic revision, somehow shortened, of the genus Montia L. concerning the spe- cies living in the Southern Hemisphere has been made. Several aspects of M. fontana   L., considered an european species, are exposed; its geographical distribution is discussed. Three species occur in South America, M. fontana cosmopolitan, while M. meridensis and M. biapiculata n. sp., herein described, are endemic of the "páramos" of Venezuela and Colombia.      They are described and illustrated; a key for determination is given. However, the citations of bibliography, synonyms and exsiccata for M. fontana are not exhaustive.
