Abstract

The unit hydrograph is a linear rainfall-runoff model of a watershed. Direct runoff hydrographs can be obtained by the convolution of the unit hydrograph and the corresponding excess rainfall events. Numerous unit hydrograph procedures have been presented in the literature, including the use of orthogonal functions. This procedure uses orthogonal functions to invert the convolution equation mentioned above and estimate the unit hydrograph (one unit hydrograph for each rainfall-runoff event, using averaging procedures to determine the unique unit hydrograph for the watershed). In this research the use of a gamma orthogonalized function is introduced. Gamma functions adequately represent the damped response typical of natural watersheds. A new procedure that uses orthogonal functions allows the direct estimation of the unique unit hydrograph using all rainfall-runoff events at the same time (without averaging).
