Abstract
Membership probabilities are assigned to the stellar population in the region of the open cluster NGC6530 solving a fourteen non linear equations system leading to the maximum likelihood parameters estimators of the bivariate normal model proposed by Vasilevskis et al. (1958) and including the estimator for the correlation coefficient. Lagrange multipliers are used because the constraints on the correlation, the number of field stars, and the standard deviations are included.
