La información recolectada para la revisión del género Cibadium (Compositae, Heliantheae), actualmente en desarrollo, ha permitido establecer relaciones preliminares con los géneros afines Desmanthodium Benth., Ichthyothere Mart. y Stachycephalum Sch. Bip. con los que parece formar un grupo natural. Del mismo modo aunque de manera más distante, la información disponible insinúa relaciones de afinidades con los géneros Galinsoga R. & P. y Calea L.
