Sobre las tortugas marinas en Colombia solo existen pocas informaciones (DUNN 1945, NICE- FORO 1953, MEDEM 1962a, 1962b y 1969), las cuales comunican, por cierto, la presencia de estos animales, pero nada sobre su biología. Aún más, hasta muy recientemente, las poblaciones que anidan en Colombia eran desconocidas fuera del país, hecho que se refleja en informes internacionales sobre la situación actual de estos animales (ANÓNIMO 1969).
