Abstract

he atmospheric electrical discharges occurring between the clouds and the ionosphere are electromagnetic phenomena whose study worldwide started very recently, about 30 years ago. Its interest lies in the remarkably high-frequency radiation (Gamma- rays) that is very different from the lightning studied so far in the radio frequency range. This article presents the phenomena known as Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGF) and Terrestrial Luminous Events (TLE) and the role of the scientific studies carried out by the PAAS-UN group in Colombia, as well as the benefits that this rigorous and systematic research will bring in the future as a contribution to the scientific knowledge of lightning in the country.
