Abstract
In Colombia, a large banded iron deposit has been found. In this paper there is the description of its mineralogical characteristics, the stratigraphic sequence into which it is enclosed, its relation with the lithologic units identified in the Colombian Amazon and the similarities and differences with banded iron deposits in other places of the World. A description is given of siliceous stromatoliths which underlie the iron deposit and their possible genetic relation with the iron beds. The stromatoliths present gold ocurrences, whose genesis looks clearly related with the chemical environment originated in the biologic activity.
