Abstract
Angiosperm classification based on the recognition of monocots and dicots is reviewed. Recent studies show that monocots are monophyletic but that dicots are not. These analyses fundamentally question the traditional systems of classification still in use, and show that the phylogeny of primitive angiosperms remains in dispute. The putative sister-group relationship between monocots and the Aristolochiaceae is mentioned as an antithesis of the traditional monocot-dicot system of classification.
