Abstract
Based on new evidence from the Reanalysis, we examine the behavior of the trade winds, especially the influence of the northeast trades, which have a marked bearing on the northem part of South America, down to approximately 5-1 0ºS during the boreal winter. We point out the presence of a current in these data, bordering the eastem limits of the Andean chain well down to 20-30ºS, during the same period of the year. Those winds, as well as the current which seemingly have remained unnoticed in the extant literature, may be understood on the basis of a simple windpressure relationship. The trades and the current may be helpful in explaining the hydrological cycle of Amazonia, the formation of the flora and fauna there, as well as the long range transport of dust and pallen, among other substances, from the north African coast to South America.
