Abstract

We consider the classical and quantum dynamics of highly excited alkali atoms perturbed by a Dirac train formed by a periodic sequence of K kicks of zero-width delta functions at a temporal distance T and kick strength Δp. The atom is described by a simplified one-dimensional integrable model. We study the effect of the train on the initial state of the atom, the electric field thresholds of ionization, and the survival probability. The agreement between classical and quantum results is good for a moderate strength of the field and during a significant number of kicks.
