Abstract
An analysis of the diagnostic and investigative studies carried out in Colombia, at the mycology laboratory at INS, on the pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans y var. gattii is presented. Emphasis is made on the frequency of one the varieties of this microorganism, the var. gattii, in certain regions of the country and on the severity of its clinical presentations. The steps followed to demonstrate its presence in nature, its relationship with the almond tree (Terminalia catappa), its capacity to grow in seedlings, and the possible connections between the plant, C. neoformans, and humans are also described.
