Abstract

The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) system is a powerful geophysical tool widely used within the geosciences. For several years, glaciologists have utilized this technique to delineate ice-rock contacts in various glacier masses worldwide. Two examples of its application in South America for defining ice thicknesses on snow-covered volcanoes have been implemented for hazard mapping and paleoclimate studies in volcanic areas. The first case involves a 2567-meter linear profile over four glacier basins of Nevado del Ruiz Volcano (Colombia). These records facilitated the preliminary definition of the rocky layer morphology, with the maximum glacier thickness (190 m) located on the Nereidas glacier (5240 m). Analysis of these profiles also led to the identification of a previously unknown volcanic structure interpreted as a crater situated in the area of the Nereidas Glacier towards the Arenas Crater. The second case references current glacier masses within the framework of studies on glacier advance and retreat at Antizana Volcano (Ecuador), aimed at understanding the dynamics of "El Niño" 10,000 years ago.
