Abstract

We evaluated the tsunami hazard in the municipality of Buenaventura under different tide, earthquake magnitude and epicenter location scenarios. Results indicate that earthquake magnitude (Mw) has a strong influence on potential flood areas as well as on wave height and waves arrival time. An earthquake with an Mw of 8.6 generates a tsunami with wave height higher than 3.0 m., regardless of the epicenter. The tsunami arrival time changes between 56 and 92 minutes. In the other hand, coast line configuration and bay morphometry at Buenaventura bay are two parameters that reduce in ~40% the tsunami wave height.
