Abstract
I argue that -contrary to the widespread opinion- General Relativity should be interpreted as a relational spacetime theory. To do so, I rely on three arguments: i) The absence of primitive identity for spacetime points within generally covariant theories. ii) The fact that the metric tensor field, having a genuinely dynamical structure, should be better understood as a material object field in its own right. iii) The hypothetical and concrete possibility of formulating geometry and inertia -in the context of classical rnechanics- as alternative relational structures rather than as intrinsically substantiva! structures.
