Abstract

The oxidation of 2-mercaptoethanol and propanethiol with Co phthalocyanine encapsulated in X and Y zeolites was studied as a function of the zeolite basic strength, generated by exchanging different alkaline cations. The oxidation was carried out in absence of NaOH under the same industrial reaction conditions. A correlation between the oxidation activity and the catalyst basic strength was observed. A relative scale of the solids basic strength was obtained as a function of the iodine absorption band shift at 407 nm. It is deduced that the catalyst basic strength is high enough to promote the disulfide formation reaction.
