Abstract

Tropical forests are characterized by having high species richness and diversity. There are several hypotheses to explain the origin and maintenance of diversity, which have been studied through a global network of plots. This is the first large scale study on the structure and dynamics of plant populations in a montane forest, through the establishment of a permanent plot at La Planada Nature Reserve (Nariño, Colombia). This plot has enabled the monitoring of more than 130,000 trees and shrubs of 240 species for five years. The results indicate that the average mortality rate is 3.65%/yr and an average recruitment rate of 3.52%/yr; the basal area and biomass increased 5% over five years. Montane forests in the Andes are more dynamic and have slower growth rates compared to lowland tropical forests.
