Abstract

The growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I, IGF-II) regulate growth, differentiation, metabolism, and gene expression in multiple cell types through autocrine and/or paracrine mechanisms, in addition to the classic endocrine pathway. This summary presents the most significant results obtained by the author and their research group regarding the molecular mechanisms of the GH/IGF axis with implications in two specific aspects. First, its function as an immunomodulator of nutritional stress in lymphoid cells, and second, its role in the development of gestational trophoblastic disease.
