Abstract

I discuss in this paper the approach of phase transitions and critical phenomena to examine the rich variety of physical behavior observed in condensed matter. I show how it is only because of the last two decades' significant progress on these phenomena that it is known a route to start thinking about some of the basic aspects in materials physics. With my interest in understanding phase transitions, I emphasize here these phenomena in solid electrolytes physics and the tools I have used to studying them. I am presenting conductivity and specific heat Cp data of single-crystal NH4A~14 close to its order-disorder transition at 198.7 K. Cp diverges as IT-Tei"°I S on both sides of Te, which is close to that predicted by the Ising model. I also found that d(lncr)/dT is proportional to Cp which shows that the short-range order determines both quantities.
