Abstract

Although the knowledge about the population structure and reproductive aspects of fish facilitates
the design of management strategies, such information is scarce for Colombian reservoirs designed for electric energy production. This study evaluated both aspects of the main fishery resources of the reservoir Peñol-Guatapé, Antioquia, Colombia, from 2013 to 2014 (Cyprinus carpio, Micropterus salmoides, Coptodon rendalli, Caquetaia kraussii, and Kronoheros umbrifer). Data was collected from artisanal, sport, and touristic fishery performed by gillnet, cast nets, live-bait hook, seine net, and fishing rod. The analyses of the 9,151 individuals collected included standard methods for
determining size frequencies, sexual size dimorphism, length-weight relationships per sex, and reproductive biology (sizes and sexual mature indexes, sex ratio, fecundity, and spawning period). Our results showed sexual size dimorphism in C. carpio, M. salmoides, and C. kraussii, negative allometric growth in M. salmoides, C. kraussii, and C. carpio males, as well as isometric growth in C. rendalli, K. umbrifer, and C. carpio females. Mean sizes of sexual maturity differed from other studies except in M. salmoides and K. umbrifer. All species showed a higher ratio of females and periods of gonadal maturity concordant with reproductive periods previously described. This information is useful as baseline data for further monitoring the growth and reproduction of the five studied species and establishing guidelines on their sustainable exploitation in the Peñol-Guatapé reservoir.
