Abstract
On the centenary of the death of Camille Flammarion (1842-1925), French astronomer, writer,
and science popularizer, it is worth exploring his legacy not only in Europe—where he is a
widely recognized figure—but also in lands far from his native France, such as Colombia. In our
country, his influence inspired the early development of modern astronomy through the figure
of José María González Benito (1843-1903), one of Colombia’s most prominent astronomers.
The founding of the Flammarion Observatory and the Flammarion Society in Bogotá marked
important milestones in Colombian scientific history and reflected a friendship that transcended
oceans, cultures, and institutions. This relationship not only strengthened interest in astronomy
in Colombia but also connected the country to an international scientific network that expanded
rapidly in the late 19th century.
