Abstract

The International Geophysical Year (IGY, 1957–1958) was one of the largest cooperative scientific endeavors of the twentieth century, involving more than 5,000 researchers from 67 nations. Colombia played an active role in this global program thanks to the vision and leadership of Father Jesús Emilio Ramírez, S.J., then President of the Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences (1956–1966), Director of the Geophysical Institute of the Colombian Andes, and Chair of the National IGY Committee. Drawing upon primary newspaper and archival sources, this study reconstructs the scale and historical significance of our country’s participation, which included the installation of networks of seismographs, ionospheric stations, atmospheric radioactivity monitoring facilities, and cosmic-ray telescopes. Emphasis is placed on contributions to the tracking of the Soviet Sputnik satellite, collaborations with the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, the National Bureau of Standards, and other international organizations, as well as Father Ramírez’s scientific missions to Paris, Strasbourg, and various Latin American countries. As an interpretive hypothesis, the study proposes a structural analogy with the Royal Botanical Expedition of the New Kingdom of Granada (1783–1816): just as that expedition systematized knowledge of the natural world in eighteenth-century New Granada, the IGY integrated twentieth-century Colombia into global geophysical research networks, in fields that today are part of what is known as space weather science.
