Abstract

In recent years, rewilding has gained prominence as an innovative restoration approach aimed at reactivating ecological functions, recovering species, and contributing to biodiversity conservation. In Colombia, where this practice remains incipient but coexists with a variety of wildlife management and recovery initiatives, there is a need to clarify definitions and establish concepts adapted to the national context. Here, we review wildlife translocation practices in the country and analyze two reintroduction experiences—the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) and the Orinoco crocodile (Crocodylus intermedius)—as sources of insight into the technical, ecological, and social challenges involved in recovering functionally important species in the country. We then propose a conceptual framework for the use of the term rewilding and related categories in Colombia. We define rewilding as a practice aimed at reactivating key ecological functions and interactions through the translocation of individuals of extirpated species or their functional equivalents. From this perspective, we argue that rewilding constitutes a practice within ecological restoration, distinguished by its integration of reintroduction biology with explicit goals of functional restoration. Building on this framework, we identify priority regions, candidate species, and ecological, historical, and functional criteria to guide future interventions that can contribute to a nature-positive agenda in Colombia.
