Abstract

The chemical and mineralogical characterization of some samples of bauxitic clays from two close regions, Cauca and Valle are presented. The chemical composition falls within the following range: Al¿0; 33% - 47%, SiO2 14% – 45% Fe2O3 7% – 17% The predominant mineral is Gibbsite (Gamma Al (OH)3); Cristobalite is also present in low quantities, as well as Goethite, as a cristalline iron mineral and metaballoysite as an asso- ciated clay mineral. Iron oxide and allophane were detected as amorphous minerals. The samples was classified according to the International Bauxite Association, IBA, as lateritic Guyana type or Kindia according to the iron content.
