Abstract

Horizontal stylolites (H-S) are secondary, intrastratal and directional structures generated by pressure-solution processes under compressional tectonic conditions. H-S ressemble small neddles whose axis are supposed to develope (to grow) paralell to the direction of maximal tectonic compression (01). Thus H-S are useful to determine paleostress directions; when the age of the horizontal stylolitebearing rocks and the age of the H-S are bo `wn, it is possible to time different compression phases. The orientation of H-S has been measured at 25 points distributed around the Bogotá-Tunja-Sogamoso Plains (middle Colombian Eastern Cordillera). The H-S occur in several silicic units of Middle to Upper Cretaceous age, but specially in those made up of cherts and siliceous siltstones (e.g. "Plaeners” of the Guadalupe Group and the La Luna, Hiló and San Rafael Formations). Comparison of attitudes of the bedding planes and orientation of H-S indicates that last are pre-cinematic to syncinematic, that means prior to or aproximately contemporaneous with the "final" andean uplift during Miocene-Pliocene times. However the most part of the H-S may have been generated during earlier Andean compressional phases than those recognized at several places at the late Paleocene.
