Abstract
A procedure is described whereby proper motion membership probabilities can be assigned to stars in the region of a galactic cluster by solving a nine non-linear equations system obtained by the maximum likelihood method, without eliminating the correlation coefficient from the mixed bivariate normal model proposed by Vasilevskis et al. (1958). This approach removes the subjective and a priori assumption that justify the usual axis rotation. The method is applied to the clusters NGC 2420, NGC 6828 and NGC 654.
