Abstract
A flood of the San Cristobal river is proposed to explain the terrible and mysterious roar which terrified the town of Santafe de Bogota during the aight of Sunday 9th March 1687. The available data. published by two jesuit historians: Father Juan Ribero in 1736 and Father Jose Cassani in 1741, and by a laic chronicler, fose Maria Caballero at the beginning of the XIX century, is perfectly consistent with the flood hypothesis. Furthermore, it greatly disagrees with any other possible geological interpretation, such as an earthquake, a storm, a lanslide or a volcanic eruption.
