Abstract
Otopappus Benth. is a genus with 15 species circumscribed to Mexico and Guatemala. One of them (O. verbesinoides Benth.) has extended down to Costa Rica, and another one, (O. hirsutus (Sw.) Hartman & Stuessy) is endemic from Jamaica. The appearence of a new species (O. calarcanus Díaz) in the Central Cordillera of Colombia, specifically in the Department of Quindio, brings up some questions related to its affinities. Furthermore, this appearence expands —in a discontinuous way— the geographical area of this genus up to the Northern part of the Andean Cordillera. The new species is illustrated and described under a new section called Australotopappus. Some comments regarding to the systematic location of this section are also made.
