Abstract

Starting from measurements of joint orientations, from fault plane solutions of earthquakes and from other geophysical data, the directions of the maximum neotectonic pressure were determined in the southem part of Mexico. It is seen that this maximum pressure is normal to the Pacific coast, indicating a subduction of the Cocos plate in this region. In Yucatan, the maximum pressure is E-W, which corresponds to the normal componen! of the shearing motion along the boundary between the North American and Caribbean plates.
