Resumen
En el siguiente artículo se discuten el origen, naturaleza, forma de acción y posible formación endógena de algunos alucinógenos en el hombre. Se resume el conocimiento actual sobre sus estructuras químicas, los factores principales que determinan los cambios sensoriales y perceptuales durante las alucinaciones y las diferentes evidencias de tipo bioquímico que permiten sospechar que algunos de los alucinógenos se pueden producir en concentraciones críticas, por alteraciones en ciertas rutas metabólicas regulares, dando origen endógenamente a metabolitos que serían factores etiológicos en la génesis de algunas enfermedades mentales, así como a ciertos procesos psicológicos que consideramos normales. Finalmente se hace un breve resumen de las investigaciones que se adelantan en la Universidad de los Andes.
