La Geomorfología, antiguamente llamada Fisiografía, o sea la rama de la Geología que se ocupa del estudio del relieve terrestre, o de las formas de la tierra, más exactamente, ha entrado francamente en una fase analítica durante los últimos 15 ó 20 años, Cuando en 1942 intentábamos una interpretación matemática del perfil longitudinal de las corrientes de agua en equilibrio, la idea podía parecer a la mayoría de nuestros colegas un tanto fuera de lugar, pues la Geomorfología de entonces, que acababa de ser sistematizada en excelente forma por el profesor Lobeck en Norte América, y unos cuanto años antes por de Martonne en Europa, tenía un carácter esencialmente descriptivo.
