Este estudio informa sobre altos niveles de tráfico de monos nocturnos (Aotus nancymaae, A. vociferans y A. nigriceps) en el área tri-fronteriza Brasil–Colombia–Perú para el mercado de investigación biomédica en malaria. Entrevistas con 43 colectores/traficantes de los 3 países confirmaron que en 2007–2008, cerca de 4000 monos fueron traficados. Censos en 8 localidades en Perú y Colombia arrojaron estimativos contrastantes de densidades poblacionales de Aotus (Perú: 3,6 ind/km2; Colombia: 44 ind/km2). Es crítico que las regulaciones de CITES sean aplicadas en los 3 países para contrarrestar el descenso de las poblaciones silvestres y la degradación de sus hábitats.
