Resumen
Nitzschia martiana (Agardh) Van Heurck (Bacillariophyceae) se registra por primera vez viviendo en tubos sobre el sustrato rocoso para la región de Santa Marta en la costa Caribe colombiana. La colecta del material se realizó en la zona intermareal y franja del infralitoral. Se hicieron observaciones en laboratorio con un microscopio fotónico. Su presencia local y su distribución mundial muestran que la especie ha presentado una amplia distribución latitudinal entre los 52º N y los 32º S, posiblemente ha sufrido desplazamiento de algunas regiones como el sur de Inglaterra y el Mediterráneo. La especie prefiere aguas cálidas, es generalmente bentónica, formadora de tubos y colonial, se ubica principalmente en la zona intermareal, es más frecuente sobre un sustrato firme y duradero como la roca pero, también, se puede considerar de vida libre o ticoplanctónica.
