Resumen

Se presenta una síntesis (25 casos) de la seneciosis, enfermedad causada por la ingestión de infusiones de Senecio formosus. La EVOH se identificó en Colombia en 1964 tras lo cual se hicieron estudios fitoquímicos y farmacológicos. La retrorsina constituye el 50% de los alcaloides presentes, correspondiendo a ésteres de 1-Hidroximetil-1 :2 Dehidro-7-Hidroxipirrolizidinas. Desde 1968 se ha divulgado a todos los niveles información pertinente con lo cual ha disminuido sensiblemente el consumo de éstas infusiones, reduciéndose el número de casos a partir de 1973 a sólo 9, el último de ellos en 1993.
