Abstract

The Botanical Garden of Bogotá (JBB) has conserved in ex situ conditions a new species of epiphytic bromeliad of the genus Vriesea, partially described in 2001 by Betancur in a local publication. It was found in the municipality of Subachoque, Cundinamarca, but it had not been determined or published until now. The species exhibits a rosette and, simultaneously, it is strictly atmospheric. In the present study we describe the habitat where it was found, the phorophytes where it grew and its height range on them. We recorded the reproductive phenology behavior ex situ for 30 weeks, as well as the flowering times for an average of 1.8 weeks, the natural ex situ pollination, as well as the average fruit growing time for 3.5 weeks and the evident permanence of fruits for 20.9 weeks. Seed maturation and release occured 17 to 28 weeks after flowering initiation. We also determined the ex situ vegetative growth 12 months after flowering initiation, with 1.9 buds on average (0 to 3 per plant). The species life cycle by vegetative propagation was over 16 months. We expect to collect seeds to evaluate the life cycle also via sexual propagation. © 2016. Acad. Colomb. Cienc. Ex. Fis. Nat.
