Abstract
The amphibian fauna of Colombia as known at present includes 583 recognized species. Of these, only seventeen species of salamanders and only 26 species of caecilians have been reponed for the country. Each group remains poorly documented. Anurans are the best studied and we report 540 species for Colombia in nine families and 56 genera. The most important families are the Leptodactylidae (212 species), the Hylidae (126 species), the Centrolenidae (63 species) and the Bufonidae (60 species). High levels of endemicity are apparent in the very humid Pacific lowlands in each Andean Cordillera, and in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta for the most significant genera (Atelopus, Centrolene, Cochranella, Colostethus, and Eleutherodactylus). Color illustrations are provided for a significant representation of the amphibian fauna of Colombia.
