Abstract

A method is proposed to study the growth of even-aged virtually monospecific forest stands that are widely dispersed by means of the evaluation, in each one of the even-aged cohorts, of the rates of growth of the tree of mean basal area and of their cqrresponding quadratic mean diameter. The method is exemplified with the study of the growth of natural even-aged stands of the tropical tree species Campnosperma panamensis Standl., characteristic of the forest wetland of the Colombian Pacific coast. The growth model of van Bertalanffy was used. The results show a better fit to the model of the rates of growth of the variable tree of mean basal area than of the quadratic mean diameter. It is shown that these variables are not equivalent, as is suggested in the literature. The equation of the growth curve of the quadratic mean diameter is derived of the growth equation of the tree of mean basal area.
