GIAMBATTISTA VICO: A NEW SCIENCE, THE HISTORY

Abstract

Based on an analysis of the work "Principies of a new science concerning the common character of countries", published by Giambattista Vico in 1725, the author shows how the mental attitude that gave rise to a science of character gave rise to a new science whose content consists of historical processes. Using his demonstrative method on phenomena described in everyday language, Vico transformed the subject of a science of historical process, contradicting the positivistc attitude that only by quantifying subjects could one achieve scientific rigor. Using the science of the capabilities of the mind, expressed first by Vico, modern science can reveal the variety and complexity of spatial-temporal character.
