Abstract

Gracilinanus dryas (Thomas, 1898) is a small marsupial distributed from the Mérida Mountain range in Venezuela to the Eastern Andes in Colombia at 2200 m a.s.l. However, its presence in our country was supported only by two specimens from Bogotá collected 72 years ago. Since then, no field findings of the species have been reported, nor have specimens been registered in national biological collections. Here, we report five new G. dryas specimens for Colombia collected in two sites near the city of Pamplona, department of Norte de Santander, thus completing seven specimens of this species from three locations in the country. The morphometric, ontogenic, and reproductive data (external and craniodental features, scrotum, mammary field) corresponded to subadult and adult individuals. This new information requires further studies on the species, as there is a large gap in the knowledge of G. dryas in the Colombian Eastern Andes, probably due to its rarity, inadequate sampling methods, and erroneous identifications. Although the new records are an important contribution to the study of the species in the country, additional samples should be collected, and morphological and molecular analyses done to clarify possible taxonomic discrepancies, intraspecific variations, and distribution patterns, especially now that the species has been categorized as Endangered (EN) in Colombia.
