Abstract

This work shows the modification of a natural clay type sodium Bentonite (from Valle del Cauca, Colombia) by pillaring and delamination processes, following two different procedures of synthesis: traditional and assisted by microwaves; using polyhydroxocationic aqueous solutions of chromium(III) or tin(IV) as pillaring agents. The modified solids were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and X-ray fluorescence. The results indicate that the starting material was effectively modified by means of the intercalation of voluminous chromium or tin species (oligomers), obtaining delaminated solids in the last case. The TPR analyses reveal the presence of Cr(III) and Sn(IV) in the modified solids, verifying the effective incorporation of the required species.
