Abstract

Methyl oleate hydrogenation with the homogeneous catalysts PdCl2(py)2, PdCl2(3-mpy)2, RuCl2(PPh3)2(2-acpy)2, RuCl2(PPh3)2(4-acpy)2, and RuCl2(PPh3)2(4-tbpy)2 was studied. The reaction was carried out at 100 °C, 30 bar of hydrogen pressure, and toluene as solvent. The substituent group and its position around the pyridine ring affect the catalysts' activity, suggesting that steric and electronic effects are involved in the reaction mechanism.
