Abstract

Two fungal diseases restricted to the American Continent, coccidioidomycosis and paracoccidioidomycosis, which are caused by the dimorphic fungi Coccidioides immitis and Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, are analyzed comparatively. Their clinical resemblances, the contrasting morphology and reproductive capacities of the etiologic agents, as well as their ecoepidemiologic differences, are discussed. The notorious contrasts between the corresponding endemic areas are stressed as coccidioidomycosis is restricted to the deserts of North, Central, and South America while paracoccidioidomycosis excludes North America but is amply distributed from Mexico to Argentina, with marked predilection for forested areas with abundant water courses.
