Abstract

Al-pillared smectites (dioctahedral and trioctahedral clays) were prepared and their properties compared with the material obtained following the same procedure on one aluminosilicate with higher interlayer charge (mica). The characterization of modified clays included X-ray diffractometry, residual cationic exchange capacity, acid-content measurements (ammonia adsorption) and textural properties from nitrogen adsorption isotherms. Pillaring process on the trioctahedral clay produced a solid with better textural characteristics and enhanced acid content than that produced on the dioctahedral material. The mica-like aluminosilicate revealed a high difficulty to allow the cationic exchange, a requirement to get optimal intercalation. However, the total acid content of the Al modified solid from the mica was substantially enhanced regarding typical Al-pillared smectites.
