Abstract

This is the first phytochemical and biological activity study made for Polytrichum juniperinum in Colombia. The principal secondary metabolites of the whole ethanolic extract and fractions obtained of this briophyta were terpens, polyphenols, cumarins, glycosilated molecules and sucrose. By Irwin Test, the mice treated with the ethanolic extract or the dichloromethane fraction, show slight and temporaly affection in movility and CNS activity. Also when the total extract and hexanic fractions, were used in low doses, the mice showed depressive activity. The citotoxicity of organic fraction against MCF-7 and dichloromethane fraction against HEp-2 and HT-29 are promising. Antimicrobial activity was not evidenced in the conditions of test.
