Abstract
A taxonomic revision of the Cuban species of Galactia P. Br. is presented, wherein 24 taxa were defined: 23 species and one subspecies, 16 of these taxa are endemic of the island. The biogeography of the genus is discussed on the light of several biogeographical hypotheses, new methods of molecular biogeographic analysis and the legume fossil record. The taxonomic diversity and the Cuban endemicity of the most of the species of Galactia require a further molecular biogeographic analysis of this genus along with other taxa of the subtribe Diocleinae with a close relationship to it, that identify those Tertiary legume lineages contributing to this diversity.
