Abstract

In this work the effect of cadmium and copper addition over the ammonium, nitrite and orthophosphate fluxes between the sediment and water column of the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta were analyzed in the Colombian Caribbean. The experiments were carried out in the laboratory with cores of sediment taken in two sampling sites with different characteristics of salinity, organic matter contents and type of sediment, during four periods between 1996 and 1997. The cadmium affected the ammonification and nitrification process in the majority of periods at both sites; the copper affected lightly the denitrification at Río Sevilla and the ortophosphate fluxes weren´t affected for metal addition. The bacterial density in sediments was strongly related to salinity, organic matter content, the type of sediment and fluxes of inorganic nutrients in the water – sediment, interface.
