Abstract
Based in documents that are preserved in the historical archives of Colegio Mayor del Rosario and provides information about the establishment of the Institute of Natural Sciences, Physics, and Mathematics at the university. Bernard Lewy, a chemist originally from Denmark but residing in Paris, served as the president of the Institute and also directed the Escuela de Ciencias at the Universidad del Primer Distrito. Both the Institute and the Escuela were founded at Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario between 1847 and 1850. Furthermore, the historical background leading to the Institute's creation is explored, including its incorporation into Universidad Central in 1842 and later into Universidad del Primer Distrito.
