Abstract
In this paper, we review research results on lightning parameters in Colombia during the last 20
years by analyzing databases of terrestrial and satellite lightning locating systems to adequately characterize this natural phenomenon in a country such as Colombia whose electric atmospheric activity and geographic and orographic characteristics, together with its location in a tropical zone, make the ountry a very special case that demands the comprehension of the phenomenon based on the spatial and temporal variations of the lightning parameters hypothesis formulated three decades ago. We present some results on the following lightning parameters: ground flash density, kneraunic level, polarity, and multiplicity, as well as on those concerning the effects of terrain irregularities on the electromagnetic wave propagation radiated by the return stroke and of anthropogenic activities, mainly the emission of particulate matter, on the electrification of the atmosphere.
