El botánico ítalo-americano Léon Croizat (l 894-1982) desarrolló el método panbiogeográfico al ponderar básicamente sus metáforas "vida y tierra evolucionan juntas", "dispersión= translac.ión en espacio+ diferenciación morfológica" y "la dispersión se repite por siempre". Este método esencialmente consiste en marcar las distribuciones de organismos en mapas y conectar las localidades de colección o áreas de distribución disyuntas mediante líneas llamadas trazos. Los trazos individuales de grupos de organismos no relacionados son repetitivos, y las líneas resultantes de su coincidencia son trazos generalizados que indican la preexistencia de biotas ancestrales, subsiguientemente fragmentadas por cambios tectónicos y/o climáticos. A pesar de que los autores pertenecientes al 'establishment' dispersionista descalificaron las contribuciones de Croizat, otros consideraron que Croizat adelantó la fundación de una nueva síntesis en biología comparada. Aquí llevamos a cabo un análisis geográfico del cambio científico. en que se presenta y compara la recepción de las ideas de Croizat en los Estados Unidos. Nueva Zelanda y América Latina, además de comentar brevemente la divergencia en cuanto a sus ideas originales.
