Abstract

We take into account two phases of atmospheric water in order to canvass the issue of whether phase changes are irreversible. I point to some of the difficulties that one might experience while trying to ascertain whether phase changes during some of the typical atmospheric processes are reversible or not. An attempt is made to justify the contention that cyclic and even open adiabatic processes are reversible, if indeed the state space is the one generally taken for granted by meteorologists. However, by expanding the definition of state, an adiabatic cycle need no longer be reversible. As it stands, the theoretical question of irreversibility is a foundational matter. Any empirical basis or even bibliographic evidence as to whether or not phase changes under natural conditions are irreversible is lacking.
